Maxwell Garbarino has been appointed as the interim village manager, starting December 8. The village council unanimously approved his contract during a special meeting on December 3, as recommended by the personnel committee. Garbarino will serve in this role for four months, after which the council will assess his performance and decide on the future of his position based on feedback from council members, staff, and the community.
Garbarino was the council’s third choice for the position. He replaces Lori Fisher, who resigned on November 15. The council initially approached Kyle Harris for the role, but he opted to become the city manager in Brown City. The council decided against offering the position to their second choice, Christine Malzahn, the city manager of Marlette, opting to negotiate with Garbarino instead.
His four-month interim contract includes an annualized salary of $110,000, paid weekly at $2,115, without benefits. After the initial three-month evaluation period, the council will consider a long-term contract, an extension of the interim role, or termination.
Garbarino, previously the city manager of Hamtramck, is excited about this new opportunity in Lexington, a place he fondly visited during his childhood at his family home. He expressed eagerness to collaborate with the council, staff, and community to advance Lexington’s plans and projects.
With over 24 years of experience in Hamtramck, including roles as city manager, police chief, and director of community services, Garbarino holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Detroit School of Law. He is known for his proactive leadership style, addressing challenging goals head-on.
Village President Robert Dost voiced his enthusiasm about working with Garbarino to propel the village in a positive direction. Garbarino will take on this role amid significant projects, including a multi-million-dollar renovation of Tierney Park, and challenges in village governance marked by recent resignations and disputes with Lexington Township over public safety funding.
