The Hamtramck Parks Conservancy (HPC) has recently welcomed a dedicated team of GM Youth Corp and City of Hamtramck Beautification Interns for an enriching two-week program focused on reducing littering in local parks. This initiative aims to foster positive behavior change through effective communication strategies.
The program kicked off with a hands-on cleanup at Veterans Park, where interns actively engaged in removing litter and beautifying the area. This practical experience was complemented by a thought-provoking discussion on litter as a “wicked problem.” Participants explored how design thinking can be utilized to tackle complex issues like littering.
During this session, the group collaboratively brainstormed five interview questions aimed at enhancing their understanding of communication dynamics within the Hamtramck community.
In the following session, the interns compiled and analyzed the responses from their interviews. They delved into research on three successful communication campaigns that have effectively addressed littering in parks. This analysis provided valuable insights into what strategies resonate with the community.
The interns then engaged in a divergent thinking process, generating a plethora of innovative solutions. They began by brainstorming individually before collaborating and exchanging ideas through brain maps. This collaborative effort led to the identification of two promising projects that align with the group’s interests and skills.
The Hamtramck Parks Conservancy is excited to see the outcomes of these projects and the positive impact they will have on the community. Stay tuned for updates as the interns continue their work to promote a cleaner, more beautiful Hamtramck.
